Hardness

Hardness determines how hard something is by scratching it against another mineral. If mineral number 1 scratches mineral number 2, mineral one is harder. Diamond is the hardest mineral, because nothing can scratch it, and it can scratch every other mineral. Talc is the softest mineral. Everything can scratch it. The Mohs scale gives a number to minerals based on their hardness, the higher the number the harder the mineral.
